What was Pat Robertson thinking? And other news stories from Thursday, Sept 15, 2011

Christian broadcaster Pat Robertson, host of The 700 club, gave some controversial advice regarding a spouse with Alzheimer’s during Tuesday’s show – telling the viewer it would be understandable to divorce a husband or wife with the disease. “I hate Alzheimer’s,” Robertson said. “It is one of the most awful things because here is a loved one-this is the woman or man that you have loved for 20, 30, 40 years. And suddenly that person is gone. They’re gone.” According to Robertson, if the husband was to take any sort of action he should “divorce her and start all over again.” http://www.christianpost.com/news/pat-robertson-blasted-for-alzheimers-divorce-advice-55650/

FYI: Most Christian denominations at least discourage divorce, citing the words of Jesus in the Gospel of Mark that equate divorce and remarriage with adultery.
FYI: Divorce is typically uncommon among couples where one partner is suffering from Alzheimer’s, said Beth Kallmyer, director of constituent services for the Alzheimer’s Association. (AP)
