Wednesday Word – August 15

I have fought the good fight,
I have finished the race,
I have kept the faith…

2 Timothy 4:7 (NIV 1984)

My family and I are having Summer Olympics ‘withdrawal’.

The games have been played. The Olympic flame extinguished.  And the medals handed out.  Some of the athletes that captured the most headlines during the Summer Games included Michael Phelps, Gabby Douglas, Usain Bolt, even Oscar Pistorius (aka Blade Runner).

But what about Manteo Mitchell? The Cleveland County native who attended Crest High School and Western Carolina – whose performance in the Men’s 4×400 relay semi-finals has been named one of the AP’s Top 10 Olympic moments from the London games.

Here’s the story:

Mitchell was running during his leg (no pun intended) of the 4×400 relay preliminaries in London last Thursday, when he heard a ‘POP” in his left leg.  Something was wrong. Mitchell had a split second choice to make: keep running or stop and lose the race for the US team.  Manteo Mitchell finished the final 200 meters in pain and limped to the side to watch the Americans finish the race and qualify easily for the final. A few hours later, doctors confirmed what he suspected: Mitchell had run the last 200 meters with a broken left fibula. Ouch!!

“Faith, focus, finish. Faith, focus, finish. That’s the only thing I could say to myself,” Mitchell said in an interview. “I just wanted to finish and do what I was called in to do.”

“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith”
2 Timothy 4:7 (NIV 1984)

BTW: The US Men’s Relay Team made it into the 4×400 finals (without Mitchell) and won the silver behind the team from the Bahamas.  Manteo Mitchell did receive a Silver Medal for his participation in the preliminary relay, becoming the first Olympic medalist from Cleveland County.
