Samaritan’s Purse left PTI this morning for Haiti – loaded with urgently needed supplies in the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew. A disaster assistance response team on board the plane will join staff already on the ground.
The plane is carrying 20 tons of essential items such as clean water, hygiene items and plastic sheeting for emergency shelter. UPDATE at 11am: Hurricane Matthew has strengthened into a Category 4 hurricane with winds of 140 mph and gusts up to 165 mph. The outer bands are already bring wind and rain to south Florida. – National Hurricane Center.
*Matthew is expected to hit Florida’s east coast late tonight or early Friday.
Interesting: The U.S. started giving hurricanes female names in 1953. It wasn’t until 1979 that hurricanes in the Atlantic began receiving both male and female names.
