Unexpected heroes? Three inmates hope their actions three weeks ago will change the way most people think of ‘inmate’ work crews.
The men, Michael Martin, Ahmad T. Lewis and Cedric Wilson Jr., sprang into action Sept. 4, saving the life of a driver whose pickup truck had caught on fire along I-40 near Kernersville. Martin, Lewis and Wilson were riding in a DOT vehicle to pick up trash along the highway when they saw a truck on fire.
Wilson said he picked up a fire extinguisher while Lewis and Martin raced to the burning pickup.
“I want people to know that just because the vest says ‘inmate’ on the back doesn’t mean we are bad people. We have just made some bad choices and made some bad mistakes. We are trying to change.”

Email to WBFJ – Thank you for sharing about the inmates who were used to minister to the motorist in the accident last week. I loved what you shared about them being people who have made mistakes but are for the most part trying to make better choices. We ofttimes don’t really believe that person could have been us.
Having had a son in one of those jumpsuits I now pray each time I see the transfer bus going by or past a group of inmates working on the side of the road. No heart no longer condemns. God loves them just as much as He does us. Who knows but that that heart might be changed in direct answer to our prayer for them.
Each inmate has a family member who has been affected by their actions and is living in a prison of their own, sentenced also. That chair at the dinner table or the obvious hole their absence leaves at the family gatherings is real. Thank you for taking the time on the air to commend these young men. It might just be the only Jesus they see or hear.
You have done what the Word says today: Remember the Prisoner as if you were their fellow prisoners and those who are mistreated as if you yourselves were suffering. Hebrews 13:3. Man what would it look like if we really did that everyday
