When you’re a teenager, it feels like the most important ‘test’ you need to pass is not the SAT or ACT.  No, it’s your driving test! But a new study out of the United Kingdom had some surprising results: ‘Smarter people’ are more likely to fail their driving test the first time??  In one controlled study, only 51% of drivers with the equivalent of being an AP-level student passed on their first attempt. If you hold an undergraduate degree, it falls even further to 48%.  So if you fail your driving test the first time, don’t worry! It probably means you’re really smart…. https://goo.gl/Kvi9uB

Back in August, a study came out about bacteria in kitchen sponges. The study, published in Scientific Reports, reported that 362 different species of bacteria can live on ONE kitchen sponge, and locally the density of bacteria reached up to 45 billion per square centimeter. But does ‘cleaning’ used kitchen sponges do any good? For the short answer: yes.  Some helpful tips…

  1. Keep the sponge away from raw meat. If you’re dealing with raw juices from meat or poultry, you should be using paper that can be disposed of.
  2. Don’t keep sponges around for too long. Trash about every 2 weeks.
  3. Clean the sponge every few days. The USDA recommends putting it in the dishwasher with a heated dry cycle, or wetting the sponge and popping it in the microwave for a minute. NPR https://goo.gl/2ynCCU
