Less than a third of Americans, and only one in five teenagers, meet new physical fitness guidelines issued by the federal government.

They call on adults to get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic physical activity and two sessions of muscle-strengthening activity each week. Children ages 6 through 17 should get at least 60 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic physical activity per day and three sessions of muscle-strengthening per week.

What IS moderate-intensity activity?  Some examples…

Walking briskly, riding a bike on level ground, playing doubles tennis.

Muscle-strengthening activity: Lifting weights, “heavy gardening” (such as shoveling), and yoga.  *Parking farther from entrances and taking the stairs count as exercise.

Leaf collection under way in Winston-Salem

BTW: Rake leaves to the edge of the yard and not in the street. City officials stress that leaf burning is not allowed inside the city limits and weather may change the leaf-collection schedule. Detailed information on routes:  www.cityofws.org/leafroutes

Fact: Leaves and yard waste take up a lot of space in landfills.  Food scraps and yard waste make up 20 to 30% of what we throw away, according to the EPA. So, letting your leaves decompose isn’t just a time-saver for you, but it’s also environmentally friendly.

Playing Christmas music too early could be ‘stressful’ to your health?

Playing Christmas music early is a reminder of your holiday obligations such as hosting parties and buying presents. Let’s keep focused on the real reason for the season!

A 2003 study from Washington State University found that when shoppers were exposed to Christmas music along with a Christmas scent – such as pine or cinnamon – they felt more positively about the store environment, which made them spend more money. Also, slower tempo music ‘slows down’ shoppers, thus shoppers spend more time (and money) in a store.

Over half of Americans (61%) experience stress during the Christmas season.

Additionally, more than one-third of respondents reported that their stress levels ‘increase’ around the holidays. -2006 survey from the American Psychological Association.

Additional findings: Employees at stores who hear Christmas carols (on repeat) become irritated due to the ‘mere exposure effect’
