Father and son Mark and Matt Whitley bought Skippy’s back in January, pledging to carry on former owner Mike Rothman’s legacy of pretzel buns and hand-cut fries. Skippy’s Hot Dogs is reopening in downtown Winston-Salem today under new ownership. This week, the menu will be limited to a few hot dogs and chips. Next week, hand-cut fries should be on the menu. Skippy’s will be open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. https://goo.gl/8OOIAW
BTW: Skippy’s former owner Mike Rothman closed the restaurant last February to undergo treatment for brain cancer. Rothman moved to Harrisburg, Pa., to be near his parents, Edward and Harriet Rothman.
Last April, local restaurant owners and employees reopened Skippy’s for one week, dubbed Mike’s Week, raising about $100,000 to help with Rothman’s medical bills and other expenses. Rothman is continuing to receive treatment in Pennsylvania.
