To all that drove ‘that car’…
Facebook posting from Robin, Erin and Jennifer (Roy Ackland’s daughters)
*My father, Roy Ackland, is retiring today after 30 some odd years working at WGHP News Channel 8 and I just wanted to share a little story with everyone on this, his official day of retirement.
When my sisters and I were younger, my father (Roy, drove a) ‘company car’…which had in Blazing letters written on the side: WGHP ROY’S FOLKS, FOLKS WAGON and one incarnation of the car had this huge cartoon of Dad waving. It wasn’t the most inconspicuous car to drive.
Now, dear reader, you need to understand that my sisters and I were never embarrassed (per se) to ride in what we lovingly named ‘The Ack mobile’ but we weren’t thrilled about it either. J
Every now and then Dad would drop us off at school and he would either hear or see some of the teasing we received because of the ‘Ack mobile’. When we’d get home from school he would gather us together and look as us in this serious manner and he would say…’Do I embarrass you?’
This question was always met with confusion because… why would we be embarrassed by a man who would get up every morning at 3:00am so that he could be at work and start his day at 5:00am? Why would we be embarrassed by a man who would then work an even longer day than most and usually didn’t get home until 3:00pm or later and would still find time to go to our dance practices or soccer games before he had to go to bed at 7pm?
Why would we be embarrassed by a man who gave us wonderful opportunities and experiences that other children our age would never even dream of? Today I would like to add, ‘No Dad, you’ve never embarrassed us. We are proud to be your daughters and we are proud of YOU!’
Congratulations on your retirement. We can’t wait to see what you’re going to do with the next 30 years! WE LOVE YOU!

BTW: Join Roy Ackland, Roy’s Folks producer David Weatherly and Chad Tucker TONIGHT (WED) at 7pm on Fox 8 WGHP as they look back at nearly 30 years of ‘Roy’s Folks’.
