Petition urging Target to open at 5am on Black Friday, NOT midnight (NEWS) Tuesday, NOV 15, 2011

A petition is circulating asking Target’s CEO to open its stores at 5am on Black Friday (NOV 25) instead of midnight so that employees can spend more time with their families on Thanksgiving Day. Target stores opened at 4 a.m. last year.   Macy’s, Best Buy and Kohl’s are opening at midnight. Walmart will offer its Black Friday specials at 10pm Thanksgiving night.  The petition has collected some 46,000 signatures.  Normal schedule for students at UNC Wilmington this morning after the campus of was put on alert around midnight.  Police continue to search for a man with a gun who ran toward the campus after a holdup at a fast food restaurant Monday evening.  The campus wide alert was cancelled at 5am this morning. Can the government force its citizens to purchase health insurance? That’s the challenge that the Supreme Court will weigh out early next year. Helping those in Need (Pre-Thanksgiving events in the Triad).   It’s ‘Hunger and Homeless’ Awareness week (NOV 12 – 20) at Wake Forest University.  Students participating in ‘Turkey-Palooza’ this week, preparing and distributing more than 200 Thanksgiving meals to organizations like The Children’s Home and The Potter’s House in Winston-Salem.  The Grand Opening of H & M at Hanes Mall happens at noon on Thursday. The first 250 shoppers in line will get prizes. Home Improvement retailer Lowe’s experienced a 44% drop in profits over the last quarter.   The company saying that we are holding back on starting those ‘honey-do’ projects. 

Occupy Winston-Salem won preliminary approval Monday night to camp in a parking lot downtown. The Winston-Salem City Council’s Public Safety Committee voted unanimously to allow the group to camp at a lot at the corner of Seventh and Marshall streets for 15 days. A 9-year-old girl from Cove City, NC (Craven County) survived on Pop-Tarts and drank Gatorade for almost two days after being trapped in a wrecked car.   The single-car crash killed the driver: Jordan’s father, 39 year old Douglas Landon.   A person walking by saw the wrecked car off the highway and called 911 late Sunday afternoon, more than 40 hours after the single car crash. Rescue teams had to cut Jordan Landon out of the 1995 Chevrolet Monte Carlo that had been upside down in a culvert since last Friday night. In his final moments, a family friend said Landon was trying to protect his daughter.  “He was curled up in a ball with his arm right across his chest and his other arm pushed out acrossJordan.
