Lifting weights cuts the risk of diabetes in women.  Researchers analyzed data collected from nearly 100,000 US nurses over eight years and found that those who lifted weights and similar resistance workouts were less likely to develop type 2 diabetes.    BTW: Previous studies have shown that muscle-building exercises protect men against diabetes as well.  http://consumer.healthday.com/health-technology-information-18/press-medical-and-health-reporting-news-552/health-highlights-jan-14-2014-683875.html

True Olympic sacrifice: It’s hard to tell Tracy Barnes from Lanny Barnes.  They are identical twins and equally skilled on skis and with guns – they’re superbad at the Olympic discipline of biathlon. Tracy qualified to go to Sochi in February, but Lanny got sick at qualifiers and didn’t make it.   Now, Tracy is giving up her slot so Lanny can go compete. FYI: The Winter Olympics in Sochi take place February 7-23.   http://newday.blogs.cnn.com/2014/01/16/5-things-to-know-for-your-new-day-thursday-january-16/?hpt=hp_t2

Now, Derrick is one game away from going to the Super Bowl.  Watch Derrick and his Seahawks against the 49ers on Sunday.  http://newday.blogs.cnn.com/2014/01/16/5-things-to-know-for-your-new-day-thursday-january-16/?hpt=hp_t2
