Protecting your ‘identity’.
Given that half of North Carolinians and Americans may have had their personal data hacked, financial experts suggest that realistically – your personal data has likely been compromised. Most financial institutions serving the Triad and Northwest N.C. say they are talking with Equifax to determine how many customers have been affected so they can begin the process of issuing new debit and credit cards.
-Debit cards do not have the same protections as credit cards since debit transactions withdraw funds directly from your bank account.
*Customers should keep a close eye on all accounts and credit reports for irregularities and fraudulent activity.
One way to do that is at www.annualcreditreport.com.
Another is to request that credit reporting agencies Equifax (888-766-0008), Experian (888-397-3742) and Transunion (800-680-7289) place a free 90-day fraud alert on your credit line.
BBB: Placing a freeze on credit is another line of defense. Taking that step does not affect your credit score. However, it does mean consumers can’t apply for new credit unless they request a temporary lifting of the freeze for a specific company to access your credit report. That action could take three business days to complete.
The state Attorney General’s Office said state law allows North Carolinians to request a credit freeze for free. https://goo.gl/T97irQ
