Today is Martin Luther King, Jr Day, a day of remembrance and a day of service.  It’s also “Religious Freedom Day”

Because of the King Day holiday: State and Federal offices are closed.  No mail, post offices will be closed and most school systems are taking the day off.

In Winston-Salem: M.L. King Day March will start at 10:30am at Mt Zion Baptist Church down MLK toward the Anderson Center at WSSU. 

Noon Hour Commemoration Service at the Benton Convention Center (FREE)

An evening MLK Day “Minister’s Conference” 7pm at Stephen’s Missionary Baptist Church. 

In Greensboro: ML King Day Parade starts at 11am along MLK Drive beginning at the Benbow Professional Center.

NOTE:  Wake Forest University has postponed most of its MLK celebrations until next Monday (Jan 23), because of today’s start of the Spring semester.  www.wfu.edu

Thirty year old Christopher Lyles, of Baltimore, Maryland, had a type of tracheal cancer that is normally considered inoperable.  In November, Swedish surgeons removed Christopher’s tumor and replaced his trachea with the new one made from nano-sized plastic fibers and covered in stem cells taken from his bone marrow.  Christopher is back at home doing well.  Lyles is only the second person, and the first American, to undergo this kind of procedure.   http://consumer.healthday.com/Article.asp?AID=660719

As many as 16 people are still missing after an Italian cruise ship hit a reef and flipped over on its side on Friday.  Confirmed fatalities have risen to six.
