Former Charlotte Mayor Pat McCrory took the oath of office on Saturday, becoming the 74th governor of North Carolina. McCrory is the first Republican governor in 20 years since Jim Martin. The GOP now controls both the executive and legislative branches for the first time since 1870 (after taking control of bothe the House and Senate in Raleigh in 2010). A public inauguration is planned for this weekend.
Lt governor-elect Dan Forest is taking the oath of office on Monday in the Old Senate Chambers of the State Capitol Building in Raleigh. The event will be private except for limited coverage by reporters. His primary duty will be presiding over the North Carolina Senate.
