A change to state law means that Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools students get TWO ‘FREE” snow days should any occur in the remainder of the school year. According to the Winston-Salem Journal, in 2012, the General Assembly amended calendar rules for public schools. Starting with the 2013-14 school year, schools are required to be in session for a minimum of 185 days OR 1,025 hours. (Previous rules required that school calendars meet both daily and hourly minimums) The Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools calendar has enough wiggle room for two cancellations because of bad weather without needing any makeup days. *If needed, the first makeup day would be Feb. 17. BTW: January and February are the months when schools are most likely cancelled due to bad weather. www.journalnow.com/news/local/article_ff01cb36-36a8-5ab5-b29f-6531b72b0373.html
