Frigid Friday…Looking to shed a few pounds, eat slower…Season 4 of Downton Abbey premieres this Sunday on PBS (Friday News)

Sunny and COLD for Friday.  Gusty winds…High 32.  Use caution driving today, especially in high profile vehicles

Heavy snow and sub-zero wind chills for many residents in New England.  Thousands of flights cancelled on Thursday and Friday.  CNN

A change to state law means that Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools students get TWO ‘FREE” snow days should any occur in the remainder of the school year. According to the Winston-Salem Journal, in 2012, the General Assembly amended calendar rules for public schools. Starting with the 2013-14 school year, schools are required to be in session for a minimum of 185 days OR 1,025 hours. (Previous rules required that school calendars meet both daily and hourly minimums)  The Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools calendar has enough wiggle room for two cancellations because of bad weather without needing any makeup days. *If needed, the first makeup day would be Feb. 17.  BTW: January and February are the months when schools are most likely cancelled due to bad weather.  www.journalnow.com/news/local/article_ff01cb36-36a8-5ab5-b29f-6531b72b0373.html

The new season of “Downton Abbey” premieres this Sunday on PBS.

Time to grab some of those ‘Forever Stamps’ at the Post Office.  The US Postal service is raising rates at the end of January. The new 49 cent rate goes into effect January 26, 2014.

Looking to shed a few pounds – Try eating slower?  A new study suggests that simply eating more slowly can significantly reduce how much we eat in a single sitting. All participants in this group study said they felt less hungry after eating a slow meal compared to a fast meal. http://consumer.healthday.com/vitamins-and-nutrition-information-27/dieting-to-lose-weight-health-news-195/slow-eating-curbs-calorie-intake-683524.html

Will the rescuers need rescuing? The Chinese icebreaker ship that came to the rescue of the 52 passengers ‘stuck in the ice’ since Christmas near the South Pole is now ‘concerned’ about its ability to move back through heavy ice in the area. The ship is not in immediate danger.     http://www.cnn.com/2014/01/03/world/antarctica-ship-stuck/index.html?hpt=hp_t2

More volunteers are needed:  Emergency Overflow Shelters for the homeless in Winston-Salem are in need of Volunteers to assist with check-in services, meal preparation and overnight stays. The overflow shelters are set to remain open nightly through March 31, as needed. Interested?  Call 899-0375   Email wsnc.os@gmail.com         Contact: Pastor Russ May with Anthony’s Plot
