Grammy-award winning folk musician Doc Watson passed away at Baptist Medical Center on Tuesday with family by his side. Doc Watson was 89 years old.  Watson had fallen at his home in Deep Gap (near Boone) last week. Doc Watson mastered the lightning-fast ‘flat-picking’ style of playing the guitar, helping to make the case for the guitar as a lead instrument in the 1950s and 1960s, when it was often considered a backup for the mandolin, fiddle or banjo.

“Flat-picking” is the technique of playing a guitar with a flat pick versus the use of bare fingers, finger picks, or a thumb pick.

Merlefest, the annual musical gathering in North Wilkesboro, is named after his late son Merle who died in a farm accident bck in 1985.    Arthel “Doc” Watson was blind since the age of one, after an infection. Read more on the life of Doc Watson:   www.news-record.com/content/2012/05/29/article/legendary_bluegrass_musician_doc_watson_dies
