Congrats!!  Kim Abrams, a sixth-grade math and science teacher at Jefferson Middle School, was named Winston-Salem/Forsyth County’s Teacher of the Year yesterday.  According to her principal, Kim cares enough to do “whatever it takes” to move children forward.  Her students said, “Miss Abrams makes learning fun.”  The finalists this year, in addition to Abrams, were Sarah Garcia ofWest Forsyth High School,Virginia Spaventa fromMorganElementary School, and Colin Tribby of Paisley IB Magnet School. www.journalnow.com/news/2012/may/23/3/jefferson-middle-teacher-named-wsfc-teacher-of-the-ar-2303537/

Several area schools – including Mt Tabor, West Forsyth and the Early College at Guilford –  making Newsweek’s  list of top 1,000 public schools in the US.  The rankings highlight public schools that have an “effective track record of turning out college-ready grads”.  BTW: The Early College at Guilford was ranked #17 on the list out of 1,000 public schools nationwide.

The NCHE Homeschool Conference and Book Fair runs through Saturday (May 26)at the Benton Convention Center in downtown Winston-Salem.  Several FREE workshop sessions will be offered Thursday afternoon only (between 3pm and 4pm)including: “Give Me ONE Good Reason to Homeschool”, “Toddlers, Tweens and Teens…Oh My!”, and “The Struggling Reader”. Conference and Book Fair information at www.nche.com.  

BTW: Nationwide: Some 2 million students are taught at home.  North Carolina: More than 83,000 students were homeschooled in 2011.  If current trends continue, homeschooling inNorth Carolinawill move ahead of private school enrollment over the next five to 10 years.

Gently Used Evangelism?  Christian publisher Zondervan will donate 40 pallets of gently used Bibles and books to World Vision and Biblica for distribution in several countries including Uganda, Costa Rica, Chile, El Salvador and India.  Scott Macdonald, President and CEO of Zondervan said that “It (felt) wasteful to throw out products (like Bibles) that have been returned to their warehouses,” RnR

Friends and family wanted to do something special to remember Lance Corporal Daniel Swaim –  the 19 year old graduate from Forbush High School –  who lost his life while serving in Iraq back in 2005.  Daniel loved the outdoors…so a new playground and granite monument will be dedicated in memory of Daniel at Yadkin County Park this Monday…Memorial Day.    www.journalnow.com              

This Monday, thousands will take time to remember those who served our country in the military, and gave the ultimate sacrifice, for the freedoms we all enjoy.   Major General (retired) Hubert M.
