One year ago.  The town of Joplin, Missouri still re-building after last year’s deadly tornado.  The May 22, 2011, twister killed 161 people, injured hundreds more and destroyed thousands of buildings, including Joplin High School.  The deadly twister arrived just hours after last year’s high school graduation.  Later this evening, President Obama will deliver the commencement address at Joplin High School.  http://apnews.myway.com/article/20120521/D9UT2DM01.html

Tropical Storm Alberto, the first named storm of the 2012 Atlantic Hurricane Season, formed off the coast of South Carolina over the weekend.   Alberto is not expected to make landfall, but the storm will produce gusty winds and dangerous rip currents from Charleston and Savannah.   www.weather.com

The state’s largest gathering of homeschoolers hits the Triad at the end of the week.  The NCHE Homeschool Conference and Book Fair starts Thursday (May 24) and runs through Saturday (May 26) at the Benton Convention Center in downtown Winston-Salem.   New this year: Workshops for the parents of pre-schoolers, plus an optional ‘kid’s conference’ catered to homeschoolers ages 5 to 12 years old.  FREE seminar sessions from 3-4pm on Thursday.   NCHE Conference information:  www.nche.com

Another loss from the Disco era: Robin Gibb one of the Brother’s Gibb, whose falsetto voice gave a distinctive sound to such hits as “Stayin Alive” and “Night Fever” passed away on Sunday after a long battle with cancer.  Robin Gibb was 62. Despite financial success, the Bee Gees endured repeated family losses. Maurice died suddenly in 2003. Their younger brother Andy Gibb died in 1988 just after turning 30.  Robin Gibb, along with his brothers Maurice and Barry, started as a band back in the late 1960s, but helped to define the disco era of the 70s.  BTW:  The ‘Queen of Disco’ Donna Summer died of cancer last Thursday.  http://apnews.myway.com/article/20120521/D9UT2IR81.html

Several state and local agencies are partnering together to provide mini-grants for churches in Davidson County to fight obesity.  These mini-grants will assist several local churches to get more physical activity and better nutrition in order to become healthier.  The grant period is for one year, starting July 1 to June 30, 2013.  Applications must be turned in by this Friday (May 25) at 5 p.m. in order to be considered for funding.
