Mental-health advocates are asking the President to step in with the imminent sale of the 608 acres that remain of the former Dorothea Dix Hospital campus and a patients’ cemetery in Raleigh.
-A petition on the website change.org is calling for the ‘site’ to be designated as a national monument, which would give the federal government a say in how the land is used.
-The petition stresses that a national-monument designation “would not preclude the use of PART of the campus for a proposed city park.”
Governor McCrory has said proceeds from the $52 million sale will go toward mental-health services.
BTW: Dorothea Dix used her first-hand experiences to successfully lobby North Carolina’s legislature to found its first asylum in 1859. Dix visited the poor and found some of them chained and neglected in jails and prisons…likely because of undiagnosed mental illness.
