Two SCAM ALERTs from the Better Business Bureau

Misleading ‘Extended Auto Warranty’ calls – The Better Business Bureau is continuing to warn about the dangers of making a hasty extended warranty purchase based solely on a postcard or phone call you may receive. http://www.journalnow.com/news/ask_sam/article_67a0bab8-68fe-5b14-bb8c-d49bb73c88be.html

The Better Business Bureau is warning about a ‘one ring’ mobile phone scam that could result in unauthorized charges on your wireless bill. Here’s the deal: Your phone only rings once and then disconnects. Eventhough you DON’T recognize the number, you  return the missed call.  At that point you will immediately be charged $19.95 (fee) for an international call and an additional $9-per-minute charge. These ‘scam calls’ typically originate from outside the US with various area codes including Antigua (area code 268), Dominican Republic (809), Jamaica (876), British Virgin Islands (284) and Grenada (473). http://myfox8.com/2014/02/03/bbb-warns-of-one-ring-cell-phone-scam/

Better Business Bureau: Simple reminders when it comes to scammers…

– Don’t give out personal information, including Social Security, bank or credit card numbers,  over the phone or by email unless you are absolutely certain with whom you are dealing.

– Don’t be pressured into making an abrupt and un-informed

– Insist on getting a contract that clearly explains all terms and conditions before signing up or providing credit card or other payment information.

** Always check out a company first with the BBB at www.bbb.org

Remember:

– Caller ID can be “spoofed.”

– Local phone numbers are easy to obtain.

– Consumers can place their phone number on the federal do not call list by visiting www.donotcall.gov

If you are already on the list but continue to receive telemarketing calls, you can use the same website to report the incident to the Federal Trade Commission.
