Back to work in Raleigh…Car crashes into Lexington BBQ restaurant…Honoring Dorthea Dix…Parents want 2 middle schools closed? (Wed News)

WBFJ News:  Wednesday, January 28, 2015

The superintendent of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools has recommended immediate testing of air quality at Hanes and Lowrance middle schools, while parents are urged school officials to shut the schools down.  The call-to-action was made during a charged meeting of the Forsyth County Board of Education – days after the Winston-Salem Journal reported that the two schools sit near a hazardous waste site that state regulators have flagged as one of the worst in North Carolina.  www.journalnow.com

New session: Praying for our state legislators as they get back to business in Raleigh today. BTW: The legislature will adopt a two-year budget this year that will likely include teacher pay raises plus Medicaid and tax reforms.  www.journalnow.com

A car crashed into Speedy’s Barbecue on Tuesday evening causing around $20,000 dollars in damage to the building. According to the Lexington Dispatch, an elderly man  accidentally placed his foot on the accelerator instead of the brake when he was attempting to park his car. A 29-year-old man was injured while leaving Speedy’s.  .    http://goo.gl/O5rpd3

Calling on Raleigh to honor Dorothea Dix and her legacy  – Mental-health advocates are asking the President to step in with the imminent sale of the 608 acres that remain of the former Dorothea Dix Hospital campus and a patients’ cemetery in Raleigh. A petition on the website change.org is calling for the ‘site’ to be designated as a national monument, which would give the federal government a say in how the land is used.  The petition stresses that a national-monument designation “would not preclude the use of PART of the campus for a proposed city park.” The Governor stressing that proceeds from the $52 million sale will go toward mental-health services.   http://www.newsobserver.com/2015/01/20/4490855_mental-health-advocates-seek-federal.html?rh=1

BTW: Dorothea Dix used her first-hand experiences to successfully lobby North Carolina’s legislature to found its first asylum in 1859.  Dix visited the poor and found some of them chained and neglected in jails and prisons…likely because of undiagnosed mental illness.  http://www.ncdhhs.gov/dsohf/services/dix/bio.htm    https://www.change.org/p/president-barack-obama-issue-proclamation-creating-national-monument-to-honor-dorothea-dix

Two guys and a balloon?  An international team is piloting a helium-filled Two Eagles balloon across the Pacific Ocean in an effort to break a pair of major ballooning records. Accomplished balloon pilots Troy Bradley, of Albuquerque, and Leonid Tiukhtyaev (too-kh-TY’-yev) of Russia, launched from Saga, Japan, early Sunday Japan time. They’re aiming for the shores of North America. As of early Wednesday, the balloon was about 960 miles northeast of Hawaii — traveling about 60 mph at an altitude of more than 16,000 feet.  More about life under the ‘balloon’ (yes, there is a potty on board) on the news blog.     http://goo.gl/pM2IuT

How to stay safe when buying and selling on Craigslist… Don’t give more info than is needed –  If someone doesn’t need your address, don’t give it to them. Meet in Public Places – Most things being sold should be small enough to sell at a public meet-up location such as the local library, a coffee shop, or even the mall.  Bring someone with you as an extra safety precaution.  Trust your instincts – If you have a bad feeling about a transaction, end it! Sometimes you just have to trust your gut and wait for another buyer or seller.  https://www.wellsfargocommunity.com/message/8401#8401
