I think most of us can identify with the Bible story about Mary and Martha. It’s found in Luke chapter 10 and in the New Living Bible it reads this way,
“38 As Jesus and the disciples continued on their way to Jerusalem, they came to a certain village where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. 39 Her sister, Mary, sat at the Lord’s feet, listening to what he taught. 40 But Martha was distracted by the big dinner she was preparing. She came to Jesus and said, “Lord, doesn’t it seem unfair to you that my sister just sits here while I do all the work? Tell her to come and help me.”
41 But the Lord said to her, “My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details! 42 There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.”
Jesus was essentially saying that when it comes to following Him, BE-ing is far more important than DO-ing. While Martha’s reaction to Jesus’ presence in her home was to work hard to make everything perfect for him, Mary understood that the most important thing to do was to sit and listen and soak Him in. If you are working in ministry today and find yourself spinning your wheels like Martha, worrying and being upset over the details, pray that Jesus will give you the opportunity and ability to release those things to His care and control so that you can instead focus on just loving, trusting and communing with Him.
I have been working at WBFJ since September 2004 when God threw me out of the boat I was riding in and set me on a new and wonderful course. I love co-hosting the morning show, although the lack of sleep does make me a bit loopy at times.
