Kids in the US get too many unnecessary antibiotic prescriptions for upper respiratory infections, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). The organization is urging both providers and parents to take steps to ensure that antibiotics are used only when truly needed.  More than 1 in 5 pediatric office visits results in an antibiotic prescription. Roughly 10 million antibiotic prescriptions are written every year for upper respiratory infections…that likely won’t improve from antibiotic use. http://consumer.healthday.com/infectious-disease-information-21/antibiotics-news-30/too-many-kids-getting-antibiotics-they-don-t-need-doctors-say-682240.html

Picking up the pieces: Thousands of people in the Midwest are trying to recover after a string of deadly tornadoes that ripped through 12 states in the Midwest on Sunday. Less than two weeks before Thanksgiving.  The fast-moving storm system killed eight people and spawned dozens of tornadoes. Washington, Illinois, took one of the hardest shots. The governor says as many as 400 homes were destroyed there. Restoring electricity to hundreds of thousands of people across the region could take most of the week. http://newday.blogs.cnn.com/2013/11/19/5-things-to-know-for-your-new-day-tuesday-november-19/?hpt=hp_t2

The Oxford Dictionary’s WORD of the year – “selfie”  The official definition:  “A photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically one taken with a smartphone or webcam and uploaded to a social media website.” “Selfie” can be spelled with “i-e” or with a “y”.  Usage of the word has gone up 17,000% since last year.  www.cnn.com/2013/11/19/living/selfie-word-of-the-year/index.html?nbd=5_things

Just DRIVE:   Triple A (AAA) is reminding drivers that they have one job when they’re behind the wheel, and it’s NOT taking selfies. Seriously, last year, nearly 400 people died in cell-phone related car accidents. http://news.yahoo.com/don-t-jerk-dies-taking-selfie-aaa-warns-160825148.html

PLAYOFFs ????  BIG night for the Carolina Panthers with a BIG win over the New England Patriots  (24 – 20) in Charlotte.  Sixth straight win.
