Tami and I just returned from the first delivery of the new school year for the WBFJ Cici’s Pizza Pledge. We had a wonderful time with Mrs Priebe and Mrs Gunter’s kindergarten class at Whitaker Elementary in Winston-Salem. However, it left me wondering – “Do they have a clue what it means to ‘pledge our allegiance’?” Do we?
These are strong words. Pledging indicates a promise…you know, the “blood brothers, stick a needle in my eye” kind of promise. Allegiance = to stand for something when no else does, to stand with someone when no one else will dare, or to stand alone when totally necessary. “I Pledge Allegiance…” What makes us think that this is an oath we intend to keep? Who knows – it might take us half a world away to an Iraqi desert! I’m sure those brave souls don’t treat these words lightly.
I mean really – what does a five year old who can’t tie his own shoes know about “pledging allegiance”? Guess it goes back to that “faith of child” thing that Jesus spoke so highly of…those times when trust supersedes knowledge and understanding.
Then again, without that firm commitment, what good are the liberty and justice that result? Without such, I guess we’d all might as well be “leading pigeons to the flag.”
