Somehow I don’t think you’ll find it quite that way in Scripture – but have you ever had a dream you just can’t shake? A couple weeks ago, there was this dream in which a young friend of one of my children tragically passed away. It’s one of those that leave you greatly disturbed upon re-joining the waking world. As the days have passed, the memory lingers and so do the feelings. The greatest of which seems to be hurt on behalf of my child who I love so much. To see them lose someone so close to them really grieves my heart.

Pondering this has brought me to a greater awareness of how our Heavenly Father must feel. I have spent too much time this year in funeral lines and at memorial services to be comfortable thinking otherwise. It kind of stems from that whole “if we give good stuff to our kids, how much more does God want to do the same for us” (Decker Transliteration). As much as my heart hurts for a loss that doesn’t even exist, God’s compassion is so much greater for the real life experiences* we face.

*I almost wrote that these experiences end in grief. But you know, with the hope that Christ brings – we only pass thru grief in these experiences. The end result can actually be much greater.

I don’t have all the answers. I don’t have very many of them. I consider this glimpse into the character and love of the Father just another privilege of knowing Him and hopefully developing daily into more of the person that reflects the same.

Have you ever wondered about the directions listed on the back of a shampoo bottle? I mean, it’s not rocket science. Yet, it seems that the manufacturers of many of these products believe we, the consumer, aren’t bright enough to figure out on our own how to wash our hair. I noticed something interesting about these directions while reading several bottles on the shelf in my shower. Two of the shampoos were for women, or at least marketed that way. The directions on those bottles were quite complex, including steps like: wet the hair, use a liberal amount of product, lather hair from roots to tips-being careful not to tangle the strands, rinse thoroughly, repeat the process and finally, for best results, follow up with more hair care products from the same product line. However, the men’s shampoo instructions were simply, “lather, rinse and get on with your day”. Now, that’s simplicity!

We often make things more complicated than they need to be, don’t we? But, when we share the Gospel with others, we need to avoid the tendency to add to, expand upon or stretch the facts. How often do we send seekers running when we load them down with rules, doctrine, dogma and expectations? When we do this, we muddy the waters and make it very hard for people to see the truth of Jesus Christ.

The Gospel is really not that complex. Jesus sums it up in these two sentences, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son,that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.” (John 3:16-17).

That is the core message. Now, I don’t mean that someone who is interested in knowing more about Jesus won’t have additional questions or need more information. However, we need to be careful that we don’t over-complicate it and make a mess out of the message.

Drinking coffee may help you live longer? A new study that tracked the health and coffee consumption of more than 400,000 older adults for nearly 14 years found that coffee drinkers were less likely to ‘die’ from such heart disease, respiratory disease, stroke or diabetes. In fact, the study claims, men and women who averaged four or five cups of coffee (yes, DECAF was an option) per day had the lowest risk of death. The findings have been published in the New England Journal of Medicine. www.ndtv.com/article/world/drinking-coffee-can-help-you-live-longer-study-212205

Facebook will offer ‘more’ shares for sale when it goes public on Friday. 421 million shares or about 25% more than earlier mentioned. On Wednesday, General Motors will stop all of its paid advertising on Facebook. The reason: The ads on Facebook have not been effective. In a recent survey, the majority of people on Facebook say they ‘hardly ever’ or ‘never’ click on Facebook ads. FYI: GM, the third-largest advertiser in the US, spent about $10 million dollars a year to advertise on Facebook. RnR

Hello, WBFJ friends! Thankfully, God uses my daughter, Lexa, to teach me countless lessons about His love for us. Most recently, it was during a thunderstorm. As the rain poured, the lightning flashed and the thunder roared, I held my daughter tenderly and rocked in a chair. Although I tried to comfort her, she kept asking me, “When will the storm go away?”. I told her that every storm passes, but it just takes time. At that moment, I found comfort in my own words. No matter what storm we are facing in our lives, only the tenderness and love of God can give us the true comfort we need. Although our humanness calls us to question God as to when the storm will end, we can be certain that if we cling to Him, he will be with us until we see blue skies and sunshine again.

Alton used to have a guy in is circle of friends that he gave the nick-name of ”60-grit” because, according to Al, his personality was like coarse sandpaper and it rubbed him the wrong way. I think we all know some 60-grit people and dealing with them can be a challenge. But, as believers, we have to ask how Jesus would have us respond.

Jesus said that the greatest commandment is for us to love God and love each other. And, he doesn’t let us off the hook when the others who surround us are very difficult to love. In Matthew 5:43-45 Jesus says, “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.”

As Jesus stated in these verses, a key to dealing with difficult people is to pray for them. When our minds start to “go there”, dwelling on all the ways we’ve been mistreated by a sandpaper person, we need to immediately turn those negative thoughts into a prayer…praying for peace with the situation and that God would intervene and provide reconciliation in the relationship.
