Cost of higher learning: Latest College tuition increase smallest one year increase in 30 years

The cost of College Tuition has gone up (again) this year. The Good News: The 2.9% increase is the smallest one-year increase in more than 30 years (according to the College Board in their annual report on college prices). Most students don’t actually pay that, though. There are grants, tax credits and deductions that help ease the cost of going to college. About two-thirds of full-time students get grants, most from the federal government.  FYI:  About 60% of students who earned bachelor’s degrees in 2011-2012 graduated with debt – borrowing a total of $26,500 on average. www.collegeboard.org/

The published average cost for tuition and fees (2013-14 academic year)…

In state public 4 year college / university: $8,893

Private college (in-state) $30,094

Out-of-state / public college or university:  $22,203

In-state two-year institution: $3,264
