Expect a smaller paycheck starting this week… (News Update)

Your WBFJ Family Station Forecast: Clouds early, then some sunshine.  Cool…High 45

Expect to see a smaller pay check- starting as early as this week. All thanks to the end of temporary cuts in the Social Security payroll tax, which Congress did not extend. For the average household bringing in $35,000 dollars a year, the 2% hike in the Social Security payroll tax will leave your annual income about $700 dollars short (or about $58 dollars less a month). www.ssa.gov/

Pray for the students and teachers at Sandy Hook Elementary School as they head back to class today, the first time since the tragedy on  December 14th. They won’t be attending their old school, which remains part of an ongoing police investigation. Instead students will attend Chalk Hill Middle School in a nearby town, renamed Sandy Hook Elementary School.  Counselors say it’s important for the children to get back into a normal routine. One expert stating that “…all in all, we want the kids to reconnect with their friends and classroom teachers, and I think that’s going to be the healthiest thing.”  A familiar face will oversee the school and its students: former Sandy Hook principal Donna Page, who retired two years ago but is returning to help in the transition. www.cbn.com/cbnnews/us/2013/January/Sandy-Hook-Staff-Students-Returning-to-Class/

Going GREEN: For a dollar, Starbucks will serve up a cup o’Joe in a logoed reusable plastic cup.  Refill your reusable cup, and Starbucks will knock 10 cents off the price…after ten refills…the cup is FREE.  FYI:  Starbucks is opening its first store in Vietnam next month in Ho Chi Minh City.  Some Starbucks beans are  already sourced from Vietnam.    www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2013/01/02/starbucks-reusable-cup-trash/1804095/

As the new 113th Congress comes to Washington, many of them started the day in prayer at a bi-partisan gathering. House Chaplain Father Patrick Conroy officiated.  The service included passages from the Old and New Testaments and a  reading from the Koran. The chaplain told CBN News his message will remind lawmakers they are called to be servants. “Being a member of Congress and
perhaps being a person of faith is about understanding oneself as a servant,
not as a politician or not as a person with power and authority,” Conroy said.
BTW:
The House will get its first Hindu member on Thursday: Democrat Tulsi Gabbard,
from Hawaii. She’s being sworn in on the Hindu scriptures instead of the Bible.
The Senate is also getting its first Buddhist ever, Democrat Mazie Hirono, who
is also from Hawaii. www.cbn.com/cbnnews/politics/2013/January/Freshman-Lawmakers-Begin-Day-with-Prayer/
